Help! Our school has planned to implement a reading program that includes
20 minutes of Sustained Silent Reading every Monday - Thursday during 5th
period AND a plan to incorporate reading strategies and additional SSR time
into our Friday advisements. We thought this was all set to go beginning
January, but now some teachers are voicing concerns and are asking, "Will
we really see results?" ...on test scores, that is (...of course). Some
have talked with teachers at a nearby school who have been doing SSR for
years and have a very vocal majority of kids and teachers against it and
have failed to see test scores rise in reading. In any case, a meeting was
called for this afternoon and I'm worried our plan may be in jeopardy. Can
anyone share some statistics supporting Free Reading/SSR
time?...quickly? Thank you!!! PLEASE REPLY OFF LIST as I am set to
nomail. Again, thanks.
