I have to chime in here on weeding. Over the years I have been transferred to many different libraries in my school district and I have generally waited until I knew the collection and teachers to weed. Four years ago I was transferred to a libray that had not been weeded for many years. I started to pitch. Our collection age rose dramatically. The kids noticed books that they couldn't see for the junk. The bare shevles got me some funding from PTCO. Our circulations went up. I am in the elementary media center and I feel that kids need good information not archival material. Keep the purpose of your collection in mind when weeding and weed fearlessly. Copies of old standerds that look tacky need to be replaced if you want students to check them out. We are competing with bright shiny video games. It's not just the Starbuck's coffee and comfy chairs that make Barnes and Noble attractive. Pam Gelbmann, Media Generalist Wilson/Madison Elem.
