For years, I have edited existing records by adding names, events, and
subjects to both the content and subject areas. If the book is a
collection of plays or short novels, I will even add the titles to the
record title in order to get a "title" hit. My collection had old
records with only one or no subjects. Whatever it takes to get the book
used is worth doing.

Yes, I even added well known short story titles to the records of short
story anthologies. I always check the table of contents of a new book.
If a "drug" book has a chapter on marijuana, I add it to the record.
Recently, I had a teacher doing research on ancient civilizations. I
pulled a batch of books and, after checking the table of contents, added
numerous subjects if not already in the existing record. CIP can be
sparse and limited. Why not list Ty Murray, Larry Mahan, and etc. in
the "Rodeo Legends" record?

During orientation, I tell the students the card catalog represents what
is in the library. Expanding the catalog records to more accurately
represent the content of the books simply improves what the card catalog
is suppose to do.
