NCLB - Beltway Reading or the Highway! No Child Left Volume II, Number 2, February, 2004 There are four articles and a cartoon this month all available for reading at http://nochildleft.com 1. Beltway Bosses: It's Beltway or the Highway - DC Reading Bosses Dictate Programs for the Big Apple http://www.nochildleft.com/2004/feb04ourway.html 2. No Job Left Behind: Fiddling in Washington as Good Jobs Flee Offshore The loss of nearly three million good factory jobs during the Bush administration is soon to be followed by the loss of another three million well paid jobs during the next few years - white collar jobs being exported as fast as call centers and engineering departments can be created overseas. What does this have to do with NCLB/Helter-Skelter? http://www.nochildleft.com/2004/feb04nojob.html 3. Write Congress! By classroom teacher Barbara Manna Many Senators and U.S. Representatives were unaware of the damage and hidden agendas built into NCLB when they approved the law. Here is an excellent letter from a classroom teacher outlining the problems she sees in trying to serve students under the rules and provisions of NCLB. http://www.nochildleft.com/2004/feb04letter.html 4. What about Passion? By classroom teacher Karen E. Joslin They spoke of states and school systems following the letter of the law but not the passion of the law. But education is not really about states and school systems. It is about individuals, teachers and children. I am not a state or a system, I am a teacher. I work with children. I so fully agree with the passion; I live the heart and soul of No Child Left Behind. I want to believe it is possible to reach every child. I do believe every child can be a success. But I disagree with the letter of this law. There are several serious flaws. http://www.nochildleft.com/2004/feb04passion.html 5. Cartoon - Don't think too hard! Heavily scripted, federally approved reading programs are often light on thinking and comprehension, condemning poor children to a future of low skilled and low paid jobs. http://www.nochildleft.com/cartoon21.html -- Jamie McKenzie Editor No Child Left editor@nochildleft.com http://nochildleft.com FNO Press 500 15th Street Bellingham, WA 98225 360-647-8759 "Because this new law gambles irresponsibly with children and schools using unproven change strategies and radical "free market" approaches it should be called Helter-Skelter." =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
