I have been adding key words under the 505 tag (contents) ever since I
began using the Follett circulation program. I add terms that the teacher
and students use, as well as names which students will be looking up for
an assignment. I also add terms from the Table of Contents as well as the
index. I then tell the students to try their keyword first under "subject"
for whole books on the subject and then try under "keyword" for books
which have a section on their topic.
For anthologies and collective biographies, I add titles, authors,
subjects covered in the book.
I also add under the subject tag if the CIP does not use terms that my
students are familiar with (often happens in a school library).
It takes very little time to enhance the the record but our students have
been much more successful in finding information quickly. Also, many books
that have not been used in years have enjoyed a new usefulness. Teachers
also have more success when looking for individual poems or short stories.
