Hello, I did a brief overview of the Dewey Decimal System for my 8th graders. = This took about 20 minutes. My "motivational hook" was finding out who = were the collectors. Some had stamps, video games, firearms, etc. I = then asked them what they would do if they had a 1,000 of these. How = would you organize it? How would you structure it? If you were a = dealer in these items, how would you find a particular item for a = customer? It was a nice lead in for Melvil Dewey. The next day they = came down as a class and did a worksheet in the nonfiction area of the = library. These were just trivia questions, but it worked very = effectively. The question I wanted to pose is this one: are any of you familiar with = unusual cataloging systems that were developed for one collection or = another? I was thinking that some of the scientific collections might = be a bit unusual. What about museums?
