Hello, I believe a key word in the ALA Bill Of Rights Statement is "predisposing". That can occur in the classroom when children are assigned to read a certain genre. Perhaps we aide and abet by labeling accordingly? Our 6th grade Language Arts teachers run a reading program requiring the students to read classics and award winning books. Although I have these designations searchable in the MARC record for each book, I also place the relevant labels on the spines of the books to help those kids who wish to browse. To enlarge the relatively small selection, I have added a category--and label--"Written by an Award Winning Author" IMHO, sixth grade boys need all the range we can give them :-) Best regards, Martin Swist mswist@asij.ac.jp Library Media Specialist The American School In Japan (ASIJ) 1-1-1 Nomizu, Chofu-shi, Tokyo, 182 Japan Telephone: 81 422 34 5300, extensions 295 & 296 Hospitality Committee Member of the Listserv, LM_NET For a good time, click on http://www.asij.ac.jp/middle/lib/index.html "It's no use going to school unless the library is your final destination."
