TARGET: Attendance software

Greetings:

I am looking for a simple student attendance software application
that will allow us to scan a barcoded ID,  link that scanned
number with a name from a look-up table and insert the name into
a record field, and then automatically insert a date/time stamp
into a record field.

The end result on the record should look something like this:
123456789012     Alfred Newman     1/7/04 13:45

The end result could be in an Excel spreadsheet format or an
Access database format.  Heck, I'd even accept a proprietary
format, at this point.

Does anyone have any experience or leads?  I know this can be
done with the big student management systems, but we don't have
that capability.  This app would be for students logging in and
out of the Library on a daily basis.   It would also be used for
tracking special event attendence.  If I can find something that
works, many of the departments that hold special functions have
expressed an interest in using the app.

Any leads would be appreciated.  I've tried various specialized
search engines and freeware / shareware / payware / hacker sites
and have found nothing.   It only makes sense that this app has
already been written! AARRRGGHH! Frustration!  ;-)
