There are several resources for inexpensive materials. The first is at your
state's library services for the blind (Library for the Blind). There she
can have access to books on tape (free), as well as the equipment to play
the tapes (4-track tapes; cannot be used on a standard tape player),
subscriptions to magazines in braille (free--which you may also want to
subscribe to for her benefit and use in your library), and possibly some
braille books (I'm not sure if the Georgia Library for the Blind has braille
books available but there are Regional libraries for the blind that do have
these; if not, the National Library Services Division of the Library of
Congress has them.)

There may also be a VI teacher --teacher of the visually impaired /
blind--(hopefully)--this person will be a great resource to learn more about
the resources that are available for the student. In addition, there are
also resources that the teacher will be able to provide the student that you
will not need to provide. If you are interested in providing technology to
the student (JAWS for Windows or any specific applications regarding
computers), this person may be able to give you more information about what
is needed (each blind individual will have his or her specific needs, just
like the rest of us).

Here are some links for access of information / resources for the blind that
you might be interested in pursuing:

Georgia Academy for the Blind: http://www.gabmacon.org/
(Check out their Media Center / Library for information about what they have
available to serve their students' needs in research, leisure reading, etc.)

In addition, I wrote an article last fall that was published in Library
Media Connection (LMC) regarding the resources for the blind and visually
impaired in the public schools. It may be available through most online
databases. I will send you (Patricia) a personal copy (by email) of this
article. For everyone else, the information you will need to locate this
article is:

From Braille to Zoom Text: Resources to Meet the Needs of Blind or Visually
Impaired Students in the Media Center by Shonda Brisco. Library Media
Connection, v. 22, n.1 (August / September 2003) p. 50-53.

If anyone else would like a copy of the article, please email me personally
and I will send you a copy.

I know that there are others on the list who are directly involved with
working with blind and visually impaired students in their
libraries--librarians at the California School for the Blind; Ohio School
for the Blind--- who will also provide you with some invaluable resources
that I have not provided in this email. These ladies are currently working
as librarians / media specialists at schools for the blind, so they are
current in their knowledge and will be most informative regarding recent
trends in library services.

If you have any other questions, please contact me off-list and I will be
happy to help you. (I was the library media specialist at the Oklahoma
School for the Blind for ten years, I am a certified teacher of the blind/
visually impaired and I my husband is visually impaired, so I have tons of
experience in this area.)

Good Luck!
