While "home" visitin my family I have been visiting several different public libraries as well as a few book stores. While in the libraries looking for certain books I find that the libraries are shelving adult fiction in several different areas: mystery, westerns, sci-fi, "literature" etc. I have been thinking that perhpas I would increase browsing and reading for pleasure if I would do something similar for my High School students. For those of you in high schools, do you do anything like this? If so, how do you indicate your OPAC as to what area the books are shelved and what categories do you use? I am thinking that mystery, Science Fiction/Fantasy, Adventure, Contemporary, Non American Authors and "literature" would meet my students needs. I know that the main arugument against doing this centers on the need for students to be able to find books in any library. But if the public library and the big book stores do it this way... Anyway, I am considering this idea for next school year and would love to hear from those who have done so and those who have some ideas. PLEASE respond off list to deborah_stafford@gaggle.net. I will post a hit. Deborah Stafford Librarian Gen. H.H.
