I was thinking that story was a bit apocryphal. Do you know a librarian that
would have "...selected a book she thought might interest him..." without a
bit of talking with him first? Hmmm, under new scheme; ask kid his name,
look it up in computer, go grab a 5rl book, toss it to him. Yup, that's
gonna bring up his abilities.....

And any possibility the counselors could have mentioned his living
conditions to those that should know?

That's a heart-tugging anecdote about a frustrated fifth-grade-level
reader. Indeed, it would be better for the librarians to know more
about their clients.

It doesn't really have anything to do with the negative posts about
lexiles, however; it doesn't address the issues in those posts of
shelving by lexiles, limiting students' choice of books according to
lexile, and giving lexiles credit for meaning more than they do.

I'm sure other anecdotes could be recanted and our hearts would be
tugged as hard wiht the frustrations of students who were only allowed
to read books of certain lexile levels, or the student who threw books
across the room or decided not to check out a book because of the
humiliation of having to select the all-too-well-labeled
low-lexile-rated book. (In my experience, these students are far more
common than ones who would announce that they coudln't read a book.)

Then there's the whole idea that presenting a student wiht books at
their level will bring that level up...
