Actually, Borders does have an online catalog that the customer can use to locate information on books in various sections. When / if you know the title or the author, you can search it and it show something like this: HUCKLEBERRY FINN--->MARK TWAIN---->LITERATURE The last entry is "where" the book is found. Then you go to the section (signage, of course) and locate the book alphabetically by the author's last name....still some library skills there. I did not find the Border's online catalog to be any more effective than "guessing" but I do realize that what THEY want the customer to do is ASK...then they can also direct you to other items (on sale, new titles, etc.) Their business is selling the books!! The longer you are there, the more likely you'll buy something. With libraries, the longer you're there, the more likely you'll give up (because you're afraid to ask the librarian where things are located or how the online catalog works) and walk out mumbling something about "that library never has anything I need!" ~Shonda Brisco Trinity Valley MS / US Librarian Fort Worth, TX sbrisco021@charter.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Toby Zabinski" <toby_zabinski@YAHOO.COM> To: <LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU> Sent: Friday, July 09, 2004 1:15 PM Subject: shelving in high school > I think the bookstores shelve that way because they do not have a catalog that lets the patron search for authors or titles. So there really is no other way to find anything!! Thank heavens libraries don't operate that way! > > toby Z > > > *************************************************** > Toby Zabinski - Media Specialist > toby_zabinski@yahoo.com > Amity Regional Junior High School > 190 Luke Hill Road > Bethany, CT 06524 > *************************************************** > > --------------------------------- > Do you Yahoo!? > New and Improved Yahoo!
