These days (boy, that makes me sound old!) disaster movies such as "Day" are
really no big deal. This generation of child (age 6 to teen) have grown up
on movies such as "Independence Day", "Men in Black", "Twister", "Speed",
and even "The Fast and the Furious"....so mayhem, destruction, and death are
really no big deal. It's all special effects and the kids know this.

When my younger brother was young (age 10 or so), he read or saw something
about a nuclear blast and he was terrified. The one constant between then
and now??? That the LM-Netters that have asked about taking a child to any
kind of disaster movie will be there during and after the movie. Those
parents and my parents were there to discuss, console, inform, and debunk
those kinds of movies. I think highly of any parent who questions any movie
for their child before bowing to the pressure of taking the child to the
movie without any prior thought or knowledge.

When I saw "Day After Tomorrow", I saw it as an adult without any thought of
whether it was appropriate for children. It was more thought provoking to
me than most of the children who have seen the movie. Most of the big
special effects you see during the commercials on TV, on movie trailers, or
even the HBO special that shows how all the special effects are done.

Thanks for listening (or reading)!
