To provide some insight into the Alberta plagiarism scandal about which Susan Jones writes: "So... the Premier didn't like his grade (which was generous) from the university and asked "the opposition and the Chilean community" to grade it?" Well, yes and no. He was not complaining about the mark but using the paper to demonstrate that he was not, as had been suggested by the Chilean community in Alberta, anti-Allende, pro-Pinochet. As such he was asking them to assess the content as a measure of his political views. Susan Jones writes, "Sounds like an abuse of position (and truly spoiled brat behavior)... it's really reaching in the loyalty department to say "well, at least he's going to school." I'm afraid the lesson students might get is that if you're in power, you can do anything you want, period." Don't think it was his "master's" degree, as Laura Pearle has suggested -- he was a student in an undergraduate correspondence course. He is proud of his continuing academic development, considering he was not a high school graduate. Hence the comment about his going to school ... which is really a different lesson: even those in positions of power are recognizing the need for a formal education and lifelong learning in order to make sense of the world and its affairs. Given his political positioning to the right of centre, this all sounds like progress to me.
