I am interested in knowing, for those of you who are in a middle school, if you are required to give report card grades for "Library". I did find information on this in the archives, but it dates back to 1999 and didn't mention grade levels. I am required to give NUMBER grades to 5th through 8th graders. This year there were quite a lot of kids who got 60s (I've even given out Zeros!). Only a handful of parents ever question it, which is pretty much indicative of the general attitude "it's only library". It does keep them off the honor role if the grade is a 70 or 75 or something like that... which some of them care about. The teachers are with me in wanting to drop the structured library classes and grades in favor of working together on collaborative projects which would receive a subject (not "library") grade. The new principal is with us on this. We just have to convince the curriculum supervisor and overcome the argument that "the report cards have already been printed, and there is a place for a library grade." Anyway, let me know what grades you teach, if you have to do report card grades or not, and I will post a tally later on in the week. I'm just thinking this can't be a normal thing for middle school!
