TARGET: non-fiction harrowing stories

I have a student who loved the Dave Pelzer books, Manchild in the Promised
Land, etc. She likes NON-FICTION harrowing biographies or memoirs of a
person who survives the experience.  I'm not looking for true life crime.
She likes stories of surviving on the streets, abusive families, kidnapping,
etc. The more contemporary, the better. She didn't like Russell Baker's
Growing Up--too nice. Again, she wants non-fiction. Any suggestions? I'll
post a hit.
