Indeed it would be illegal to reproduce copyrighted music, but there is a way that might help you handle similar requests in the future (those that may not be copyrighted and are legal to tape). Perhaps there is a local video "buff" or even a video professional who would tape these events and sell copies to the parents. It could be done on a pre-pay basis that would guarantee a bit of profit. If the equipment is available, perhaps a high school production class could do it for profit. Once established, it could be a real money maker for them, as well as great practice. We handle graduations, pageants, talent contests in a similar manner. The copyrighted issue could be handled by requiring that permission be obtained before copyrighted music is used-a good lesson for the real world that should be enforced by everyone top down. (I like dreamin'!).
