Hi all.... I saw the interview.... it was great! MM read from Stupid White Men. His book was due to be released on/or right after 9/11 = and, due to the content of the book and criticism of America, his = publisher stopped the release and asked MM to tone down and/or rewrite = about 50% of the book. =20 When MM said that he read the book aloud and the librarian took action, I = thought right away about two things: =20 First -- I wondered if it was LM_Net.... as I'm relatively new to the = listserv (last December.) Secondly..... we (collectively as a group of librarians) had better be = careful and not let this get out..... otherwise, those of us who are = teachers and librarians will be members of two terr*rist groups! It made me proud to be part of such a powerful group! Read On! Readingly yours, Chris Christine L. Evans, librarian Library/Media Center Barrington Middle School - Station cevans@cusd220.lake.k12.il.us 847-381-0464 >>> Mary Ludwick <ludwick@SWBELL.NET> 06/28/04 10:02 AM >>> FYI I did not see the show, but my sister said that last night 60 Minutes interviewed Michael Moore. In the course of the interview Michael Moore said "one does not want to mess with librarians as they are a powerful group." Seems he read from a book he had written in 2001 in a public forum. At = that reading, a librarian was present. He told the group that his publisher wanted him to tone down what he was writing and would not publish unless = he changed ?? MM said the librarian reported this to her "librarian chat = line" and the next day enough librarians contacted the publisher that the publisher went forward with the book. So, MM spoke about the power of librarians to change things with publishers.
