Dear fellow netters, A few days ago I requested some smoothie recipes and of course you came through with flying colors. Although I have not had a chance to get ingredients and personally try these recipes, they do look good. I also had some requests for a hit so here it is. A big thank-you to all who sent recipes. Vaneesa _________________________________________ We make smoothies all the time, though we don't use a recipe, we just throw in what's at hand. For us a typical smoothie has strawberries (frozen actually work better than fresh), half a banana, some kind of berry yogurt, honey, and some ice. We might also use other kinds of frozen berries, orange juice, apple juice, frozen yogurt, vanilla ice cream. The combinations are endless! _________________________________________ 1/2 to 1 glass of milk, one pack of equal, one cup of fruit - use less equal with bananas. Mix in blender. I don't know if this qualifies, but it is a good shake. _________________________________________ The simplest smoothie recipe = frozen bananas and milk mixed in blender. Adjust ratio to get the desired thickness. _________________________________________ We experiment -- put in a few cups of strawberries (or frozen), either shaved ice (2 cups) or ice cream (3-4 scoops), a splash of OJ, a few cups of milk. Adding other fresh fruit doesn't hurt (bananas are potent, so 1 should do it). The blender is about 3/4 full with all this, then we turn it on. _________________________________________ From Walking Fit Magazine. 1 cup fat free milk 1/2 frozen banana 1 t sugar 1 cup frozen strawberries, pineapples chunks, or blueberries Blend. Other additive ideas: vanilla flavoring cinnamon wheat germ ice _________________________________________ My brother swears by his two ingredient smoothies... Vanilla yogurt, and fruit, any type. Simple enough? I tried it with plain, and it's not so hot, but I can tell that the vanilla is what it was missing. Next shopping day I'll buy it. Enjoy! _________________________________________ The smoothie recipe our family likes best is very simple and you can eyeball the quantities and types of ingredients. This fills about 3 16-ounce glasses. Here goes: 1 banana (add more tofu and yogurt if you don't care for banana) about 1 cup of other fruit such as strawberries, watermelon, and blueberries (we keep frozen blueberries in the house all year for this purpose) 1/2 block of tofu (cut into smallish chunks) 3/4 cup of vanilla yogurt adjust liquidity with juice or water a sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg (those are the secret ingredients) Put it all in the blender and enjoy! _________________________________________ My Favourite: Banana smoothie: Ingredients - Low Fat Version: 1 large or two small ripe bananas 1 Tablespoon honey (Only if you like it really sweet or the bananas are under ripe) 2 cups low fat milk 1/2 cup of low fat vanilla yogurt Break the banana into chunks, drop into a food processor /blender with the other ingredients & whizz it all up until seriously frothy - serves 3-4 (depending on the size of the glass!) Ingredients - High indulgence version: 1 large or two small ripe bananas 2 cups full cream milk 1/2 cup of vanilla ice cream (Choc Chip - adds an extra bit of indulgence) Proceed as before - MMM!!! _________________________________________ For a strawberry smoothie: 1 cup fresh hulled or frozen strawberries 2 cups low fat milk 1/2 cup of low fat vanilla or strawberry yoghourt You can ring the changes with soy milk, different flavoured yoghourts, add some peanut butter, substitute bananas with a cup of frozen/fresh/tinned fruit - berries, peaches, apricots are great, either singly or in combo. Some people like to add wheat germ, eggs, vitamins etc. to make like health shakes but I like mine fairly simple & smooth!!! ENJOY!!! _________________________________________ I just finished processing the last 2 weeks of mail at the school, and noticed that the July/August issue of American Girl has 4 or 5 simple smoothie recipes in it. Plain & simple ingredients like frozen or fresh fruit, milk, yogurt, etc. This might be what you need! _________________________________________ I don't use any recipes -- I just toss in what I have around! I've used mixes of orange juice, strawberries and yogurt or banana; banana, peanut butter and milk; mango, ice, orange juice; etc. If your family likes things sweetish, use extra berries; if they like it tart, pour in a little lemon/lime juice. Hope this helps! _________________________________________ Here's one that's a hit here: In a blender put 5+ strawberries [depending on taste & size] Vanilla yogurt- at least 1/4 cup, more to taste One of any of these: Banana, peach, pear, berries [my personal favorite is banana, but my daughter likes the berries best- blueberries or raspberries] Orange juice to cover. Blend. Sip. Adjust to taste Drink! Add a whole grain muffin and you have a great breakfast or mid morning snack. _________________________________________ This is a great one .... thick and filling and yummy. It's made with Vanilla Soy milk from the dairy case. I had never tried soy milk before and would not have tried it ... but I am needing to push fiber in my diet and my daughter made it for me before I knew it had soy milk in it, and I loved it!!! .... now I make one almost every day for breakfast while I am running around getting ready for school and it keeps me full till lunchtime. _________________________________________ ADD to BLENDER.... 1 Cup Vanilla Soy milk (make sure it's vanilla flavored) 1 frozen banana (frozen in quarters) 5 strawberries cut up 1/4 cup blueberries or other fruit of choice (opt) Blend. It makes a VERY generous serving. ENJOY!! Notes: * The frozen banana eliminates the need for ice cubes which would water it down. When I bring bananas home I break them into 1/4s and freeze each one is a small baggy. * We think you could also use fresh frozen strawberries or blueberries (or other fruit) when fresh ones are not in season * I add a packet of artificial sweetener ... might make it too sweet for some tastes. My daughter adds 1/4 t cinnamon because she is diabetic and needs that once a day. She also adds some folic acid powder for the same reason. She says the folic acid doesn't effect the taste. _________________________________________ My favorite smoothie is made with 1 cup of Silk brand vanilla soy milk (it has to be this brand--the other brands taste and look yucky, I think) and one cup of frozen fruit. I always use one half of a very ripe frozen banana (the way I do this is cut the ripe banana into at least eight pieces before freezing to make it easier to grind up in the blender) and about a half cup of the other frozen fruit. The banana eliminates the need for another sweetener, I think, but you could add honey or sugar to make it sweeter. Hope you like it--I have this for breakfast a lot, especially in the summer. _________________________________________ We have soothies often for Breakfast. So I may add more ingredients to make it a whole meal. Basically whey powder (2 scoops) and frozen fruit (1/2 bag) liquid - I often use Almond milk- even water is fine, ice in summer, banana is good, anything from the fruit bowl that needs to be used, handful nuts ..., green powder. If you really need a recipe use one you've found and leave out the weird ingredients! _________________________________________ Hi, I came across a recipe that was in the a local magazine that comes to my home. It is put out by the Methodist Hospital of Dallas. The recipe is: 1 cup unsweetened frozen strawberries three-fourth cup of 100 percent orange juice one half a cup of low-fat yogurt Blend all ingredients in a blender, pour into a glass and drink! You can substitute frozen blueberries, mixed berries, fresh mango or peaches. Instead of orange juice, you can use pineapple, tangerine or any one of a number oa 100 percent juice blends. Also, try different yogurt flavors. _________________________________________ Put the following into your blender in this order: 1 banana 1/2-1 cup frozen strawberries, thawed just enough so your blender won't complain 1 container of any kind of yogurt, or even the drinkable yogurts any kind of juice, or milk if desired...around 1/2 cup (adjust the quantities of each ingredient to change the texture and thickness of this) (I suppose you could substitute some other thick dairy substance for non-yogurt lovers.ice cream!) Blend. My kids have enjoyed this drink since they were little, and now they're grown and still drink it. _________________________________________ Berry Smoothie 10 oz. plain whole-milk yogurt, kefir or coconut milk 1-2 raw eggs (optional) 1 tbsp, extra-virgin coconut oil 1 Tbsp flaxseed or hempseed oil 1 Tbsp goat's milk protein powder (optional) 1-2 cups fresh or frozen berries From The Maker's Diet by Jordan Rubin _________________________________________ Go to the National Dairy Assoc. (google search address) or other Dairy Assoc. They have many. _________________________________________ Vaneesa Thompson Library Media Specialist Vaneesat@aol.com -------------------------------------------------------------------- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
