I read the NY Times article and was disappointed at the implication that
teachers are inethically "taking advantage" of a loophole. I don't think it
is fair that certain groups are excluded from benefits that others may
receive just because they have another retirement plan. This on top of the
news that our govt is about to pass a "totalization" agreement with Mexico
that will pay social security benefits to illegal aliens. Are we saying
these people, who worked in our country illegally, are more "worthy" of
receiving benefits than Americans who have paid into social security and/or
another retirement plan? What about those of us who have paid into social
security for over 10 years and also retire from teaching in TX? The $ we
paid in to ss will never be recouped because our benefit will be reduced by
the number of $ we receive from teacher retirment, ie. 70% of the teacher
retirment monthly income is subtracted from the monthly ss check. We will
only receive what is left, if any at all.
