Hi: We had a successful "One Book" this past fall. Please visit our
little website for more info:

http://www.mahtoreadi.homestead.com

We had a committee composed of myself and the local public librarian and
several community members. We have a number of living authors from our
area so we chose one who was willing to come to an "Evening With the
Author," a very informal Q & A session. See the website for pictures and
more details. We had about 125 people come but many, many more read the
book and participated in book discussion groups in local coffee shops.
Our local grocery store sold nearly 200 copies alone! We didn't provide
free copies...I had 5 here for students to check out and the local
library had a few copies, that was it. People didn't mind buying it via
Amazon or from a local bookstore. Since we had such a good time, I've
contacted other authors who are willing to come to an "Evening." We've
chosen R.D. Zimmerman's "The Kitchen Boy" for our next book (he writes
as Robert Alexander for this one). Garrison Keillor is on our list for
next Spring, also Al Franken and several others for future dates. It's
been fun tracking these folks down and seeing how responsive they are.
One we'd really like is Tom Friedman but he travels so much it's hard to
pin him down to a date. Give it a try and good luck to you!

Subject: one community, one book

Hi. We're throwing around the idea of a "One Community, One Book" event
for
our high school. Has anyone done one of these? How big was your
population?
Who selected the book? How did you provide the books--did you buy one
copy
for each participant?

Any information would be appreciated.
