Our professional collection is growing step by step. Out of 17,000 titles in our overall collection, about 100 are in the Professional Collection. That seems small, but it is difficult to justify purchasing more when our students collection requires so much. Titles in the Prof collection are requested by teachers, administration, and curriculum coordinators. I add a few library media/ information oriented titles each year myself. The collection is used primarily by younger teachers especially those in graduate programs. We are in the process of building a new school, thus a new library media center. In that plan we have a designated room for teachers within the LMC. It will house the Prof collection, have work areas, computer stations etc. I am sure when this is all in place we will see the collection being used more than it is at this time. All our titles are in our general catalog. If students want to use/ check out a book from the PROF area, they can. These are mostly books for psychology classes on cognitive development and learning styles When we add new titles to the Professional Collection I send out a teacher-wide e-mail with title, author, call number, etc and a brief summary. If I can find one, I will link to a review, etc. The professional collection is important to have and I believe we never do enough for teachers. Just like the rest of the collection, weeding is essential. Any book more than 10 years old will be closely scrutinized and, of course, old technology has to go. Ask the curriculum coordinator for decision making help here. The more faculty, administration, etc you involve in the Professional Collection the more purchasing assistance you stand to get. Hopefully someday, the district will provide each school a certain amount each year for professional books, periodicals, etc. Until that time, we are doing the best we can.
