Thank you to everyone who responded. I received a range of answers from web cataloging advantages to the trouble of having those records during inventory and managing their upkeep. So, I've decided to stick to Webquests or web sites to maintain links. I've included all the responses to those deciding what works best in their library. Sincerely, Ms. Leanne Ellis > High School Librarian > Asociacion Escuelas Lincoln > Andres Ferreyra 4073 > 1636 La Lucila > Buenos Aires, Argentina shisho@go.com frequently catalog websites for the students to use when doing research. This helps them to locate specific information without wasting time surfing the 'net. Usually I use the Easy Entry screen to put in the website. I fill in all the appropriate information describing the site, then I copy and paste the URL into both field in the Electronic Resource section of the Added Descriptions tab. This automatically plugs it into the 856 tag. Because I am doing the surfing and evaluating, I usually have the website open at the time I am cataloging it. This helps with the copying and pasting. It took the students a little while to figure out that these website were available. Most of them still think they can find more and better sites if they do the searching themselves. As you know sometimes it's like moving a sleeping elephant to convince students that the internet doesn't provide all information (and relevant at that). The teachers are very thankful and excited to find websites cataloged into the OPAC. They like the timesaving element. I hope this helps. I list multiple sites, repeating the 856 tag as often as needed. I also set this type of thing as teachers request. I download monthly WebMARC from Sagebrush into our Follett system. A sample can be downloaded free from the SAgebrush site. I think the address is www.sagebrushcorp.com if not, search WebMARC and you should get to the page. Terry -- *********************************** **** Terrence E. Young,Jr.,M.Ed., M.L.S. In fact I remove that tag before I load records. The biggest problem that I hear about, is that those links change, and need to be checked on a regular basis, to verify that they are still good links. Hi Leanne, I started doing this several years ago. I ran into a problem with inventory. It considers a web site as an item in your collection. If you are trying to get a quick look at your collection without breaking down the categories...you have to always remember how many web sites you have in your collection. I finally gave up and took them out. Leslie Lomers Fairhope High School Fairhope, AL LLomers@aol.com (home) LLomers@bcbe.org (school) did last year--added several hundred sites. I think I wasted my time. AS you know, web sites move around all the time. I don't have time to check dead links. I have quit adding sites & have removed the dead links as I become aware of them. Sounded good & I thought it would be helpful, but the kids just want to use the catalog to find our books--they want to Google to find Websites.
