Dear All, I had some wonderful response to my question about school library design. Thank you all for being so helpful. I compiled the responses I received and they are listed below.=20 Regards, Candace Aiani, Librarian =20 Taipei American School 800 Chung Shan N. Rd., Section 6 Shihlin District Taipei, Taiwan 11135 R.O.C. =20 Phone: (886-2) 2873-9900 #241 Fax: (886-2) 2873-1641 Email: aianic@tas.edu.tw ------------------------------------ The secret=20 is to be very clear in your own mind as to the pedagogical issues that=20 should drive the design and find an architect that is willing to listen. -------------------------------------- If you can afford consultants from abroad, I would recommend Carolyn=20 Markuson and Rolf Erikson. Both have worked as school librarians; =20 Carolyn was also a district supervisor at one point in her career. She=20 has been a freelance consultant for many years and has worked with Rolf=20 on a number of design projects. They have authored a book on library=20 design, published by ALA. <http://bibliotechcorp.com/intro.html> They=20 might be able to advise from afar if you can't afford to get them to=20 visit the site... Agreed: you want someone who knows what libraries are all about. Among=20 my experiences - an architect who was astounded to discover that we=20 allowed students actually to work in the library and (even worse?) to=20 touch the books, he thought we should be a closed access library (his=20 solution to our space problems); and an architect whose actuality=20 differed from the plan, with shelves far too close together - (his=20 solution? he recommended a one-way system...). --------------------------------------------- Congratulations and good luck. This will be a fun process, and a challenging one. I highly recommend Pauline Anderson's 1990 title, Designing School Library Media Facilities. She was the director at Choate Rosemary Hall School in Connecticut for many years, and a facilities design consultant. I worked with her in the late 80's - in fact the Building program we wrote for the Episcopal High School in Houston is included in the book. I also took her course on how to write a building program, and find the process incredibly helpful as you think through what you need and want and how the whole might work best. -------------------------------------------- I would strongly recommend Rolf Erickson <rerikson@minuteman.org>. I have worked with him on a facilities project for an overseas school before and found his work excellent. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
