I was delighted with all the hits I received on this topic and all of = the wonderful librarians who offered their help individually. Bless you = all!!! I also found that there were many like me who are interested in pursuing = it. I would say to you--It's a lot of work but very rewarding according = to those who have achieved success. =20 Below are the responses I got from those who have received, sought, or = are seeking this prestigious award. You are to be commended for your = dedication and perseverance.=20 *************************************************************************= *************************************************************************= **************** I began last school year, and came within 17 points of certification. I = am working on one portfolio (due April 16)and one assessment (early = June) this year, and will find out in November if I succeed.=20 It is an incredible amount of work, but very rewarding. I tell anyone = who is interested to read/download the portfolio instructions a year in = advance, and go through the year thinking: this is the collaborative = lesson I would teach; this event would work for portfolio four, etc. = Even if you spent the rest of this year studying the process, and then = began next year, you would be in better shape than if you didn't look at = it until next year. A good source of information is a yahoo group called librarymedia. As = long as you listen to advice from people who have certified, and don't = send anything you have written to the group, you will find it a great = resource.=20 Let me know if you have any more questions, and check in if/when you = decide to pursue certification. *************************************************************************= *************************************************************************= *********** I was certified this past year and will try to answer your = questions.....In=20 Alabama we had a group that met monthly to support and help one another. = We=20 all passed! That was incredible for us! It has meant a $5000 raise for = us=20 yearly for the next 10 years which is great, too. *************************************************************************= *************************************************************************= ************* I'm doing it this year. It is a *lot* of work, but it's been = interesting. *************************************************************************= *************************************************************************= ************* I am currently working on mine. In fact, it is due of March 16, so this = next=20 week I will be finishing it up and packing it off. Then I have just 2 = weeks=20 more before the test. You may ask away, and I will try to answer = although it may=20 take a week or so until I get to it!=20 *************************************************************************= *************************************************************************= ************** I am in the process of seeking certification. My portfolio has gone and = I take my assessment test in two weeks. It takes a lot of time and = dedication. I'd compare it to going back to grad school only it's for a = short period of time. For me, the attraction was the boost in pay. It = counts toward the calculation on my retirement. *************************************************************************= *************************************************************************= *************** I have been working toward my "portfolio" and testing date since = November. It takes HOURS and HOURS...lesson preps, videotaping, = documenting achievements, REFLECTING, online group mentoring. Not a = task to take lightly, but it is guaranteed to improve your performance! = I'm in my last month of portfolio prep and it is crazy...typing every = night and for hours on weekends, submitting to readers and then = re-typing! Analyzing goals & objectives and attempting to interpret = them to match national standards... =20 I don't know if this is what you wanted to hear, but let me know = if I can help you in any way with your decision. *************************************************************************= *************************************************************************= ****************** I received National Board Certification in Library Media the first year=20 it was offered. It was a very intense 6 months of work. I would say I=20 spent 2-3 hours almost every day working on some aspect of the=20 portfolios. Some days it was just rereading the standards and thinking=20 about what I do that met those standards. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards has a good site=20 where you can download the standards for Library Media and maybe even=20 the portfolio items. I think the URL is http://www.nbpts.org There's also a listserve through Yahoo of those going through the=20 process. You might find that a useful resource also. They will give=20 you all sorts of helpful tips, like videotape early and often. If you decide to go for it, good luck! *************************************************************************= *************************************************************************= ************* Shirley Fitzpatrick, Library Media Specialist Metro-Midtown Alternative High School Wichita, KS sfitzpatrick@usd259.net =20 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
