I am running Athena 9.1 on a thin client network in my new library. My circ
computer is a full workstation but the student workstations are "dumb
terminals" working off a Windows terminal server using Windows 2000. I have
been suffering all year with frequent DBA error messages that render the
Athena catalog inaccessible. Occasionally one can click through numerous
error messages and search but usually the only solution is to close down
Athena and reboot the server. Needless to say, with classes in all day
that's not a practical solution. The problem does not seem to have any
pattern that I can see and sometimes will go weeks working flawlessly.
Sagebrush has no experience with thin client and told me today that they did
not recommend or support this application. However, the technician was kind
enough to give me some suggestions and I'll give it a couple of days to see
if they work. Has anyone else run either Athena or another circ/cat program
on a thin client network and have you had any problems? I have put new full
workstations in the budget for next year but with the way things are going
here in Maine in terms of education funding I'm not holding my breath.
Thanks....hope someone has some ideas.
