"Dry Frye" is a wonderful preacher character from a tale told from American Folklore, more in the tall tale variety. The "picture book" version of a telling is the one by Paul Brett Johnson. There is also a telling in a collection from American Folklore by Richard Chase called, GRANDFATHER'S TALES, and The Folktellers, Connie Reagen-Blake and Barbara Freeman have it on one of their recordings--and a fine telling it is. I have the recording in my collection at home but I am at school. There would be other versions as well but these are among the most well-known.
