Hi folks, If you haven't seen the March 2004 issue of ASCD's Educational Leadership journal, find a copy. The theme is "What Research Says About Reading" and there are two articles that should be of interest to LMSs. The first is by our old friend, Stephen Krashen, the tireless advocate of libraries and humane (and effective) reading instruction on page 18 called "False Claims About Literacy Development." (Available online http://www.ascd.org/publications/ed_lead/index.html) The second, "Special Topic: Save the Libraries" p 82 is by professors Susan Neuman and Donna Celano. It does a wonderful job of concisely explaining the big differences good libraries can make in bridging the literacy divide and the threats school libraries currently face. I know I will be sharing these articles with MY school's administrators! Ed Leadership is well-respected by them. All the best and a big thanks to the authors.
