Sorry this took so long to post! Thanks to all who sent me info. My = original post: "We have an alternative secondary school which will, hopefully, be = getting some serious help with it's library next year...I would like to = start with suggestions for fiction books...What are your 2 or 3 most = popular fiction titles...(elementary as well as secondary)."=20 Here are the responses (**suggested more than once): SERIES BOOKS: **Goosebumps series by R. L. Stine Babysitters Club by Ann M. Martin Alex Rider Adventures by Anthony Horowitz (Stormbreaker, Point Blank, = Skeleton Key) Cirque de Freak by Darren Shan Angus, Thongs... series by Louise Rennison =20 Zack Files by Dan Greenburg **Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey Scooby Doo Mysteries by James Gelsey Deltora Quest by Emily Rodda Dear America series (various authors) Lost Years of Merlin series by T.A. Barron Bunnicula series by Deborah and/or James Howe A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket Bailey School Kids by Debbie Dadey Hank the Cowdog series by John R. Erickson=20 Chet Gecko series by Bruce Hale Hank Zipzer books by Henry Winkler,et al A to Z Mysteries by Ron Roy POPULAR AUTHORS: **SE Hinton Lois Duncan Robert Cormier **Walter Dean Myers Joan Lowery Nixon JRR Tolkien **Sharon M. Draper John Grisham Orson Scott Card Nicholas Sparks Roald Dahl=20 Ben Mikaelsen E.R. Frank (urban kids, hip-hop speak) POPULAR TITLES: **Go Ask Alice by Anonymous Deathwatch by Robb White The Rag and Bone Shop by Robert Cormier Define "Normal": A Novel by Julie Peters The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer **The Beast; Slam; and Monster by Walter Dean Myers **Tears of a Tiger - Sharon Draper (sequels: Forged by Fire; Darkness = Before Dawn) **Guinness Book of World Records Ripley's Believe It or Not Taming the Star Runner and The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton Holes by Louis Sachar Make Lemonade and its sequel True Believer by Virginia Euwer Wolff Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick Give a boy a gun by Todd Strasser Smack by Melvin Burgess The Lovely bones by Alice Sebold My Life in Dog Years by Gary Paulsen Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen A Child Called It and others by Dave Pelzer TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS: For my lower ability sixth and seventh graders, I have bought Dunc and = Amos books off of used book sites (They are no longer in print) and they = have like the combination of humor and mystery a lot. =20 Get several copies of the Bluford Series by Anne Schraff and Paul Langan = from Townsend Press. It is a series of 7 books featuring = African-American teens, and I cannot keep the books on the shelf. They = get so worn out from use that I buy about seven sets three to four times = a year. They are hi-los, written at about a fourth grade level, but the = reluctant reader teens love them. I have had parents come up to me and = tell me how those books turned their child into readers, and the kids = come in asking for more books like them. =20 Townsend sells them dirt cheap. You can buy an entire set for = $7--that's right--a buck a book. For 49 bucks you can buy seven = sets--AND they offer a teaching plan for an in the classroom unit. www.townsendpress.com We have an annual "Women's Day" to deal with issues and to work on = community building. One of things that we gave the girls was a copy of = "The Coldest Winter" by Sister Souljah. This is a book that the English = Dept. has had on its bookshelves and cannot keep on the shelves. I have = not read the book, but the English teacher says that she would have some = concerns about the graphic nature of the book in a regular HS.=20 If some students have been dealing with abuse, America by E.R. Frank, = though raw in content and language, is excellent. It would be good for = staff and counselors who work with the students to read it.=20 TESTIMONIALS: My top suggestion is Tears of a Tiger by Sharon Draper. (Also the = sequel Forged by Fire and Darkness Before Dawn--same author) I had a 17 = year old boy tell me he hadn't read a book since 3rd grade and LOVED = this.=20 If a student comes in (especially a girl) and says that she doesn't like = to read, but must get a book, I give her a Sharon M. Draper book and = inevitably she really enjoys it! =20 THANKS AGAIN TO ALL WHO SENT SUGGESTIONS! I have also compiled a 4 page = list of upper elem., jr. high, and high school recommendations from the = archives (I searched above/below grade level and high/low reading). If = you are interested contact me and I will send it to you via attachment.
