Reading Counts has a cool feature you may not have found. If you got to Tools/Quiz
Manager/Search (top right of screen), you'll find a chart with tabs. If you click
on Themes or Topics you'll be able to make lists of your titles on themes or topics
that some of those reluctant teachers may be interested in. If the topic of this
month's lessons is insects, you can provide a list of RC books that reinforce that
topic. You can even tag these books in your MARC records as Science RC or History
RC or Hispanic RC, etc.
There are a couple of other tactics I've used over the years to encourage
teacher participation. One is to put something in the hall that makes it clear
which teachers are really promoting reading in partnership with you and RC. Those
teachers left out or not mentioned so frequently will probably perk up. Another
tactic is to share with the principal who is really encouraging reading with this
wonderful software program you've installed and bought for the school. After a few
of these reports to the principal, (s)he will notice who is on board and who isn't.
If the teachers get some positive reinforcement from the principal, those
reluctant teachers will notice.
Reading Counts can really make reading count in your school. I heard Jack
Gantos say this week that as librarian your most important job is make everyone
love reading. Those teachers who don't share that goal with you because they have
other goals that supercede love of reading will just have to be won over--slowly,
sweetly, but surely.
