Thanks to so many of you.
I got so many responses that it would be impossible to respond to each of =
you individually, but I am really grateful for everyone who took time from =
their busy day to answer my request. I'm not really sure that we came to =
any consensus. However, it appears that most of us seem to agree that it =
is helpful to have reference to the original site in the URL.=20

In some instances, it was felt that it would be just as easy to copy and =
paste the real URL into a bibliography as it would be to copy and paste it =
into the tiny URL site and get the shortened version. The real reason why =
this came up was because the students in our school are required to have =
notecards on actual notecards which had to follow MLS format and be turned =
in along with the bibliography. It was one thing to cut and paste into =
the typed bibliography, and quite another thing to copy the long URL onto =
a notecard.

Perhaps the best option is to use base (or root) url which would link to =
the necessary page.

Now..... after all that said, I loved Barbara's response. I tend not to =
sweat the small stuff. In the particular case which initiated this =
question, the student had a website with 60 something characters.
He was trying to put it on a notecard and his college brother showed him =
tinyurl.com/ Was the student trying to get out of work.... trying to save =
his hand, or trying to ensure that he copied the URL correctly....whichever=
..... no reason to go bald!

Thanks so much to everyone.
I guess it wasn't such a ridiculous question after all.
Readingly your,
Chris=20

I'll add that the subscription databases are starting to include a
shorter permanent url in a field in a record that will always take
you back to the record... provided you have an id and password or are
coming from a known IP address. This link is usually different from
the one that you get if you copy the url in the location bar.
