Hi all,
I am in a k-5 school. I am a one man/woman show. Here is how I handle my
Spanish books:
I have all my Spanish books yellow doted on the spine. I TRY to keep a
special section for Spanish easy fiction. This is located with my other
picture books. I have a section for non-fiction 468. These books also have
yellow dots, and are located where the 468's are normally located in the
dewey system. However, if my Spanish non-fiction gets mixed up with the
English non-fiction, I don't really care, as long as it is in the right
dewey order. The yellow dot alerts all my students that the book is in
Spanish. My regular fiction (chapter books) in Spanish, also have yellow
dots, but they are mixed in where they would normally be shelved (Spanish
CLE are with the rest of the CLE). This is done for two reasons, 1. Older
students want to be able to find what they're looking for without being
singled out and sent to a special place, and 2. Space is at a premium.
Because our school is 73% Hispanic, I want to help my students and their
parents find what they are looking for with the least amount of effort.
Spanish speaking parents find it easier to help their children, when their
resources are all together. Often they will check out the same book in both
English and Spanish.
I hope this helps,
