Dear Netters: Thank you all so much for your terrific suggestions for a "Get Caught Reading Promotion". I'm still receiving e-mails, but thought I would go ahead and post what's come so far. If I receive anymore, I'll post them in another hit. I tried to thank everyone, but if I accidentally skipped you, please forgive me. It's been awfully busy around here lately! So far, I've decided to start taking photos of anyone I catch reading around the school and Friday we're having "Get Caught Reading a Shirt" day. I may hand out book marks to readers and possibly even host an ice cream party for anyone photographed, but I'm not sure about that yet. Again, thanks so much for your enthusiastic responses and support. The responses are listed below. Marian ----------------------------------- I read your post to LMNET about "Get Caught Reading" ideas. An idea I used this year that students really liked: Students bring in pictures of themselves reading in unusual or interesting places. I gave a basket of books to the student who was the most "creative." I also gave one book to each student who brought in a picture. We had lots of fun doing this and we got some very unusual pictures. ---------------------------------------- Perhaps you could use one of the students or staff to roam with a digital camera at different times during the day. You could then print out pictures of people caught reading. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- At one time, all faculty and staff (you could have students do it as well)would wear a shirt with positive sayings on them. Classroom teachers then walked the school with their class looking for the sayings and talking about them. ---------------------------------------------------------------- I did a "Get Caught Reading" during National Book Week this past November. I dressed in a Sherlock Holmes type of costume with the hat and trench coat. Each day I spent about 30 min. going through the cafeteria, office, computer lab, etc. taking digital pictures of anyone I caught reading. (On the back of the trench coat I had a sign that said, "Reading Detective." At the end of the day I would print the pictures (in color, of course) and display them on the wall outside of the library. I added paper cutouts of cameras and microscopes to focus on the pictures. It was one of the biggest things with the least amount of effort I have ever done. The kids (K-4 bldg.) brought in their parents . . . everyone stopped to see "who got caught." It was a lot of fun and easy to do. ------------------------------------------------------------ I am doing an "AR T-Shirt" day in May & one of the things I'm asking my teachers to do is to stick a sticker on the shirt of any kid who is wearing their AR T-Shirt (which they earn at 100 pts). You could ask your teachers to stick a sticker on any kid "caught reading". Wouldn't cost to much and I bet the kids would really get into seeing who could get the most stickers. ------------------------------------------------------------------ We did a successful promotional bulletin board for "Get Caught Reading. I took pictures of faculty from the back reading a book (usually identifiable in the picture). Most shots were over the shoulder pictures. We laminated them, used the caption "Guess Who Got Caught Reading", put the bulletin board up, and turned it into a contest. You could use student leaders' pictures, too. We still have faculty members who have their pictures posted in their rooms or offices. This was fun for everyone. Many kids could identify what book the person had picked. --------------------------------------------------------------- One year I just went around with the digital camera and popped into classes. Whenever I found someone reading, I took a picture and posted it on a "Get Caught Reading" bulletin board. It was fun and kids enjoyed seeing the photos. -------------------------------------------------------------- I (and a few helpers) will be quietly roving the playground at break times taking photos of students reading. These photos will go on display outside the library. At the end of the month all those "caught" will have their names go in a draw for a book voucher. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Another librarian in my district gave "Get Caught Reading" bookmarks to the entire staff. If they caught a child reading, they gave the kid a bookmark. Children signed the bookmarks, and they went into a drawing. ----------------------------------------------------------------- If they get caught reading, they get a slip which allows them to check outan extra book? Sit with you or the principal at lunch? Free homework Pass? ------------------------------------------------------------ Perhaps you could use one of the students or staff to roam with a digital camera at different times during the day. You could then print out pictures of people caught reading. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Last year I took digital pictures of students and staff reading their favorite book. Then I printed them out on letter size paper, laminated them, and made several displays throughout the building. I made sure I took class pictures (full group) of every single classroom. I also took many individual students and staff. Everyone seemed to enjoy both the photo taking and the displays. ------------------------------------------------------------------ I just finished a "Get Caught Reading project. Go to http:library.lhs.usd497.org. I took pictures of kids reading and made posters. The posters were hung outside the library in the library hallway. The kids love this project. The slide show is some of the posters. -------------------------------------------------------------- We did something with digital camera, scanned and printed pictures. Took them of faculty, staff, and students reading by themselves, together, to a class, to someone else. Wherever in the school we saw it happening. Put them on a bulletin board in the LMC. ---------------------------------------------------------------- How about take pictures of people reading, go to clark color labs website and have posters made. two years ago they charged $5 for a poster and where i was we took picture of kids and school staff reading and had it made into posters ----------------------------------------------------------------- A very simple thing that we did at my school last year was to compile a list of good books that we wanted our elementary students to read. This was a joint project with the elementary library media specialists and public librarians, but you could easily compile your own list of favorites. We called it "100 picture books everyone should know," a title we borrowed from the New York Public Library. I typed it up as a checklist and challenged the students to read the entire list. If they brought back the statement verifying their reading signed by a parent, they received a prize (paperback book & little toy from my treasure chest) and certificate signed by me and the principal. You could take pictures of the students who complete the program and create a bulletin board entitled "The 25-picture book club" or whatever (100 is a bit much for K-3). You could also do it with a specific genre or perhaps caldecott winners. Just a simple idea.. -------------------------------------------------------------- I do Get Caught Reading all year long. School staff hand students that are caught reading a little Slip of paper. The student writes their name on it and place It in a fish bowl in the library marked with their grade level. I draw every Wed for caught ya reading winners. Names Are announced over the intercom. They come To the library and pick out a free book. (From Scholastic and Donated books) It's fun!!! Please post a HIT --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Have a banana split party. You could hand out tickets when you catch them reading. Especially with hot days coming, ice cream is always a hit, and reasonably inexpensive! -------------------------------------------------------------- Marian Royal Librarian Parkview Elementary School Socorro, NM marianroyal@zianet.com -------------------------------------------------------------------- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
