I just spent the last hour outside with the primary balloon kid - got him a
pin - and watched him pop over 100 balloons. He told me he was up to 2.30 AM
filling them. He popped them in a cooler- then I had him pour the water on
the bushes - and then scrap every piece of the popped ballon - I didn't want
a bird to eat any and choke. I'm exhausted - was hot outside - and I'm
dressed all in black today. We have 15 more min to go.

Subject: RE: dress code and senior pranks

While Senior Pranks have been officially banned, it still doesn't keep them
from trying.
Two years ago, there was a Senior Tag contest going on. Students would pay
to enter and form teams. Teams would ambush others and score hits with
water guns. The winning team got the money. It got quite heated...and
scary. They were ambushing others at their homes and when the police got
called a few times when neighbors saw suspicious looking young men sneaking
around with what looked like guns, the principal had to make an announcement
officially ending that activity. That didn't keep them from still doing
some not so funny things - two who didn't like me much as I wouldn't let
them play games on the computers, or email their girlfriends, got the
custodian to let them in to "get their books they forgot". He didn't come in
with them, just left the door open. They doused my chair at the circulation
desk with some awful smelling cologne and hurried out the door, closing it
behind them. Since it automatically locked, the custodian didn't notice what
they did. The next morning I opened to the awful smell. It took two years
to air the chair out.

Now, any water balloons, water guns, etc. are confiscated immediately and
the custodian tells students they have to wait until the library is open the
next morning to get anything they left behind - or go to the principal to be
let in.

This year they tried again to start the Senior Tag and the first couple of
kids that we caught got detentions and the threat of in-school suspension if
it continues. Since in-school suspension means a lower grade, that seems to
have squashed it.

And back to the water balloon argument....I just came in from the back
field. We are having our field day today - half day of school and everyone
is on our 28 acres - baseball, bungee jumping, games, etc. I heard a rumor
at 6.30 this morning from some of my early library club kids that juniors
were sneaking water balloons (in their cars) to pelt seniors. I reported it
to the our Athletic Director (in charge of the day) and some careful
questioning of some kids has produced names and cars. We just confiscated
the balloons and the students have been disciplined.
