When I was in high school in the late 70's (I must be getting old now that
there is a nostalgia show for the decade), we had a Compensatory Reading
class. Our English classes were quarter length and debate was three
quarters. The last quarter the teacher had CR. It was great. Last
period of the day. You went in, got in line to discuss your 30 pages
read, conferenced, the you could leave. If you did not have the reading
done, you sat in class. There was a recommended list, but you could
choose other titles if agreed upon by the teacher. The class was
pass/fail, so it only mattered that you got the reading done. Don't
recall a minimum # of books, so long as you kept up with the daily page
count.

The class had at least thirty students in a school of about 800 and
included some surprises.

While I'm not interested in receiving any classroom assignments, it's one
class I might consider taking on.
