We seem to be of two minds when it comes to practical jokes. We either put up with them, or we hate them. I have no tolerance for pranks that cause other people trouble; and I would expect the students involved to clean up any mess created. But I enjoy a well thought out joke that shows planning, insight, creativity and humor. I love the energy that it creates and the sense of camaraderie that follows. Of course, there's no easy way to insure that the pranks are well done--but I hate to see them completely forbidden. What a challenge for a class: to do something that causes no damage or hurt feelings, that makes a clear statement about who they are; makes people smile; and that they take full responsibility for; knowing that if they go out of bounds, they lose privileges. Three of my children have graduated--I need to ask them about their favorite pranks--I remember discussion, but not specifics.
