Subject: HIT: Teacher in-service - UnitedStreaming

Some people asked for a hit when I finished this. I am also doing lesson
plans for our databases, but since this is so long, I'll post them
separately.

United Streaming web site
http://esc11.unitedstreaming.com

Setting up your own account (see handout)

How to search - by keyword (or topic), by subject and grade level, by
curriculum standard (these are listed for Texas) or take a look at all
titles available.

Keyword example: Penguins - shows 5 titles: one for 2-6, 3 for JH and
HS, and one for K-1. Notice how it lists running time, date and
producer. Click on Correlations for first title. Shows you your TEKS
covered with that video. You can write them down on your lesson plan!

Subject and grade level example: Science skills and technology, topic -
Science fairs and projects, grade level - all [because I just want to
see what they have]. Shows one title: How to Prepare a Science Fair
Project [I discover this now that I just ordered a $95 video on this
same topic, but now you see we have more to choose from!] Notice this is
for grades 5-9, made in 1998. Check correlations - given for each grade.
Click on Blackline Masters: You see you have a complete 17-page guide
you can print out for your students. They can look at it as you watch
the video or you can give it to them to go over afterwards or just to
take home. Also, you can save this to your hard drive and customize it
for your class or to use again next year. Click on Teacher's Guide -
There's a complete list of instructions and suggestions on how to use
the video in your classroom. This one's 20 pages long, but you can skim
and pick and choose what you want.

Click on Title to Preview - Good idea to preview to see if you like it,
if it's appropriate for your level, if you want to use part of it or all
of it, etc. Choose stream to show it right then. This starts video
immediately, but also give you a breakdown of the video on the right.
(Scroll down to look at list.) Notice how you can show a video quiz
after they view the video. Let's try it. Quick way to check
understanding or take a grade. It's good to tell them you really expect
them to learn something from this video; it's not just free time. Video
Quiz is printed on last page of the student guide so you may just want
to print that our separately for the students.

How to download - If you like it and want to download, right click on
the "d" symbol and choose "Save Target As" from the pop-up list. Choose
the location where you want to save it: on your desktop makes it easy to
find, or you may want to save it into a folder marked "Science Fair
lesson."
Note: These do take up a lot of space on your hard drive, which will
make the computer run slower. So, you may want to delete it when you are
through using it.

How to add to play list - To save it so you can find it easier next year
when you want to use the same video. Click on "a" symbol. It will ask if
you want to add it to "My Playlist." If you want to do that, click
continue. Check your playlist and it's there. Learning Resources -
Videos linked to historical events that happened on each day. Click on
this link at top of page. Click on August along left side. Scroll down
to see what's available that month that might go with your curriculum.
You see that it has a couple of videos related to the election process,
good for this year.

All available titles: Click on this. A subject listing comes up or you
can look at all titles starting with A-D.

On your own: Pick a topic of your own and put together a lesson plan
incorporated all of the resources available. Try to find one that
includes a blackline master and a quiz for the students to use. Don't
forget to put the TEKS on it. Then, you'll be ready to turn it in to
your principal.

I'll be on hand to assist you as you try to go through the steps on your
own.

Lunch break or end of session (give out certificates).
