Almost my entire fiction collection is paperback, with the exception of a few hardback picture books. Very few of the latest titles come in hardcover so without paperbacks my fiction collection would be non-existent - even if they were available in hardback they would be to expensive. Each one is catalogued and covered and circulated just as any other title is, and if they wear out from overuse, that's cool. It means I have bought stuff the kids want to read. And what they are reading is modern, up-to-date with authors and themes that they like I would much rather replace worn-out paperbacks than weed and throw out unread hardcovers that someone from another era thinks is what the kids SHOULD read. Computers have a shelf-life of three years - why expect books to be even more?
