This program would only step on toes or censor if children are not allowed
to read other items of interest. Some people put unnecessary restrictions
on what children may read.

Let's compare this to my daughter's high AP English class. She is required
to read materials on an approved list. Her teacher will not let her count
the DaVinci Code for her class, but this by no means suggests that Lora is
not allowed to read that book. She'll have to read another book for
purposes of the class.

At my school we use AR in what I feel is a positive manner. The kids like
to see how many points they or their classrooms can achieve. VERY few
teachers limit a child's reading to AR, and very few use a quota. We would
probably not be what Renaissance Learning would call a model school, but
we've used it for eight years now, and our kids and teachers love it.

Subject: [LM_NET] Reading Renaissance/AR

Hello All,

I am doing research on the Renaissance Reading Program.. Some of you may
call it Accelerated Reader. Any comments on whether this program steps on
any toes in the area of intellectual freedom or censorship? Let me know
what you think!

Thanks
