Thanks to all who sent response to my query on good high interest-low level books or series for high school readers. Following is a digest of what was sent to me. ------------ Orca Soundings publications--Short paperbacks, definitely cover appeal for the tween/teen crowd but low reading level. The writing is pretty good and the books don't look like some hi/lo that I've seen that just scream, " I can't read well" Townsend Press (www.townsendpress.com) has some paperbacks called the Bluford series that are low level, but high interest for high school. Only $1 each and they send the teacher's guide free. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, Tex, Rumblefish, all of Hinton's books. Girls would like Lurleen McDaniel's novels. Also Sharon Draper books. Look at Capstone Books, Rosen or World Almanac Books. They have some nice series on sports, motor sports, extreme sports, recreational activities, pets, etc. The reading level is middle school, but they could be used right up through 10th grade. These are great for special ed students. Two of the best references I can suggest Steck-Vaughn and Perfection Learning. -------------- Debra E. Evers, Media Specialist Cushing High School 1700 E.
