Thanks to everyone for the input regarding how your systems/districts used Accelerated Reader and especially how and if it counted in the grading policy. This is a compilation of responses I received. 1. I was strongly urged NOT to use AR as a grade. 2. The Reading Renaissance training emphasizes that grades should NOT be associated with AR. 3. AR should be fun and something that kids shouldn't have to worry about getting good grades on. 4. AR is mandatory in some systems and is counted as part of the grade but it's up to the individual teachers. 5. AR successsfully gets students to read more when used for a grade. 6. It's frustrating to some students who can't pass a quiz. Some don't like quizzing on books they read. 7. Many see benefits and disadvantages within the program. No "cut and dried" answer to the issue. Again, our division has a policy about how AR is used in grading. I think I was amazed to see that many areas don't use it that way. I guess since I'd only seen it used for grading purposes, I'd never thought about the many alternative uses. Thank you. Sheila W. Davis, Library Media Specialist W.A.
