Students at this age need very close supervision while looking at books. I think
your idea of board books is very good. I use them as well with our Early 5s
program. Is one teacher keeping the books at school where she can supervise and
the other one sending them home where there is little supervision? You might want
to check into that as well. A lesson in book care is great, but will probably not
take care of the entire problem if there is no supervision to go along with it.

Subject: Re: Pre-K students tearing up books

How about doing a book care session with this group?
Our preschool makes great use of our school library and does not damage
the books. I think it's largely because the classroom staff models
appropriate handling of books and reinforces my expectations.

Hope this helps,
Robin
