Hi, I am in my first position as a school media specialist. My first task was to weed the collection, and now I need to arrange the library books in a workable manner. The school is K-5, however, there is not a working card catalog. I basically need to arrange the books in a manageable way without using the card catalog, although the books are labeled using the Dewey Decimal system. I was thinking of arranging them in the following categories: Easy Read, Fiction, Nonfiction, Holiday, and Reference. There are quite a few books, so the task seems a bit overwhelming. For example, some books may be labeled fiction, but they could be in the Easy Read category for the younger kids, or a holiday book might belong in the younger kids section, rather than just holiday. There are also a lot of reference books on countries, etc. Some might be geared to first graders, while others to fifth graders. I guess I don't know if I should have separate sections with a lot of these categories, or keep it simple, and group it them together - all books on countries, holidays, etc. Any ideas on how to arrange the books in a workable manner for both myself and the students would be greatly appreciated. Keep in mind, there is not a working card catalog, print or online. Regards, K.
