I have eighth grade classes in my computer lab doing online research on the Progressive Era of American history. They are supposed to read the articles, take notes on their assigned topic, and then create a newspaper article. The advanced class is taking it and running with it. No problems for them, however, I have several special education students in the other two blocks who are reading on a second or third grade reading level. The sites that the teacher has chosen for them are written on a seventh grade or higher level. The textbook is written on the same level, so that is of no help. I found an article on Enchanted Learning on the invention of the electric light bulb, which was fine for the students who read on a third grade reading level but not for the other students. Can someone recommend some "easy reading" sites on the following: Spanish American War, Theodore Roosevelt, the invention of the light bulb and the automobile? The classes are coming in later today and I need to have something that I can print out and to give to the students and a teacher's aide who will work with them. If there is interest, I will post a hit!
