My original post: I have a 2nd grade teacher needing help teaching Inferencing to her students. Anyone have favorite picture books that they use for this skill?? Thanks so much for any suggestions! Tina Ewing Media Specialist Hoover Elementary Bartlesville, OK ewingtj@bartlesville.k12.ok.us Thanks to everyone who sent in suggestions - we are starting lessons tomorrow!!! REPLIES: any of the chris van allsburg books work very well, especially Mysteries of Harris Burdick Cassie For older students I use a picture with something cut out of it that's really obvious -- something like a picnic basket with a salad, and the bottle of salad dressing conspicuously cut out so it's a white blob in the shape of a salad dressing bottle. Susan Do you have a copy of Stephanie Harvey's _Strategies That Work_? On p. 105 she begins a discussion about inferring which should help. She mentions _Tight Times_ by Barbara Shook Hazen being a good one to teach inferring and with it the teacher is having kids infer from the pictures. Another example she uses is _Teammates_ by Peter Golenbock which she uses to infer themes. Lots of other titles could be used the same way as these two, so you should be able to wow your principal with many books from your collection! Bettie Good Dog, Carl. Show the kids the picture of the dog, Carl sitting next to the baby and the laundry chute. The next picture is of Carl running down the stairs to the basement. Have the kids infer (by drawing a picture) what is happening. (Kids draw a picture of the baby going down the laundry chute.) Brenda These books have been suggested for inferring by Debbie Miller, author of the book Reading with Meaning: Creatures of the Earth, Sea, and Sky by Georgia Heard Fireflies by Julie Brinkloe Fly Away Home by Eve Bunting For the Good of the Earth and Sun by Georgia Heard Grandfather Twilight by Barbara Berger How Many Days to America? by Eve Bunting If you Listen by Charlotte Zolotow Miss Maggie by Cynthia Rylant Mother Earth, Father Sky selected by Jane Yolen Oliver Button is a Sissy by Tomie dePaola The Royal Bee by Frances and Ginger Park Something Beautiful by Sharon Dennis Wyeth Where are You Going, Manyoni? by Catherine Stock Winter Fox by Catherine Fox Also, books by Chris Van Allsburg, especially The Stranger and Mysteries of Harris Burdick Town Mouse, Country Mouse - Jan Brett The Tenth Good Thing About Barney My personal favourite is Tight Times - Barbara Shook Hazen - pictures lend themselves to many inferences by children. Donna Strategies That Work by Harvey and Goudvis suggests these titles: Dandelions by Eve Bunting The Rag Coat by Lauren Mills See the Ocean by Estelle Condra The Table Where Rich People Sit by Byrd Baylor Tight Times by Barbara Shook Hazen Also Alexandra Day's Frank and Ernest books James Marshall's George and Martha books Chris Van Allsburg books Susan There is a nice list of books to use to teach inferring in each of these books: "Strategies that Work: Teaching Comprehension to Enhance Understanding" by Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis Bull Run - Fleischman Datelin: Troy - " DAndelion: Bunting Encounter - Yolen Fables - Lobel Jun29, 1999 - Wiesner The Rag Coat - Mills Rose Blance - Innocenti See the Ocean - condra The Table Where Rich People Sit - Baylor Teammates - Golenbock Tight Times - Hazen Also Alexandra Day Frank and Ernest books James Marshall George and Martha books Chris Van Allsburg books "Reading with Meaning" by Debbie Miller Creatures of Earth, Sea, and Sky -Heard Fireflies - Brinkloe Fly Away Home - bunting For the Good of theEarth and Sun - Heard Grandfather Twilight - Berger How Many Days to America? - bunting If YouListen - Zolotow Miss Maggie - Rylant Mother Earth, Father Sky - Yolen Olver button Is a Sissy - Paola The Royal Bee - Prk Something Beautiful - Wyeth where Are You Going, Manyoni - Stock Winter Fox - Stock Peggy -------------------------------------------------------------------- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
