Dear LM_Netters:
I think I opened a can of worms so I am appealing to you for help. We use
accelerated reader for everyone in our middle school except the absolute
non-readers. In looking at our list of quizzes I discovered that we are short on
titles for our Resource kids and got full backing from administration to shore up
that part of our program. The problem is I can't seem to find any books. Most of
these kids have between a 3.0 to 4.0 reading level. I am looking for books that are
of high interest to middle schoolers but that don't have too much text and/or too
small text on each page. In addition, the covers need to not look to childish. As
many of you know, these children have a hard enough time fitting in, I want them to
be able to have "cool" books too. I've tried Capstone but those books they
advertise as 3-4 reading level are generally at least between 4 and 5. I also have
looked at Phelan's "High Interest-Easy Reading" but again, "easy reading" seems to
be higher level than what!
these students can handle.
Can anyone recommend places to look for books? I'm really stuck here.
