LM_NET Archive

I would like to hear some of your thoughts on collection development
with respect to map resources.

After reviewing messages from the LM_NET archives, it seems that the
wealth of excellent Web based map resources has lessened the need to
purchase print versions of things that are available online.

With respect to these print resources, I would like to get a general
idea of the kinds of maps, atlases, software, etc., that you feel are
highly useful and a necessary part of your collection. I am interested
in items that you have as well as items you would acquire if funds were
available.

How large of a map collection do you have and what types are they
(topographic, thematic, historical, political, cultural, demographic,
world/area/region, nautical/aeronautical charts, travel/recreation,
pull/roll down maps)?

Does a portion of your collection have a specific geographic focus? If
so, what?

Are your maps cataloged? Do they have subject access? Which
classification system do you use (Dewey, Library of Congress, Boggs and
Lewis, another system)?

How extensive is your atlas collection (both general and thematic)?
What themes do your thematic atlases cover?

How much and what kind of map related software does your library have?
This could be software for printing maps or map outlines as well as
sophisticated GIS software such as ArcView or LandView.

Your response to one or more of the above questions is much
appreciated. Please feel free to provide additional insights you feel
might be helpful.

Please respond to me directly. I will keep your identity a secret when
I summarize responses and post a HIT.

Thank you,
