These can usually found through local bookstores or through your regular =
book vendors such as Follett or Mackin. You will have to specify =
"pop-up" or "tactile" books in the search---I'm thinking of those books =
such as "Pat the Bunny" and the Clifford books with the "fur" or other =
tactile surfaces. Most can be located also by choosing "preschool" =
titles. Depending upon the reading level of the student, you may not =
want these titles for your students because the reading levels will be =
so low.

However, the American Printing House for the Blind offers a complete =
series of tactile books (large print and braille combination--twin =
vision) that your VI teacher should be aware of and should be able to =
order for the student using APH Quota Funds. The books (On the Way to =
Literacy Series) can be found at: =20

MaxiAids also provides tactile books. Their website is:=20

Another resource (that is FREE) is provided through the Oakmont Visual =
Aids Workshop:

(Fern Harger)
Produces free readiness and concept books for teachers of blind or =
visually impaired children grades preschool - 3rd grade. Must fill out =
an application and send two copies. (Call for the form--make a copy to =
keep for future use but you will also need to fill out two copies and =
send those two copies back to Oakmont. The additional form will be your =
"master" copy for any future requests that are needed.)
=20
This group will provide you with 10-20 tactile books that can be used =
for the visually impaired / blind. The cost is free, but you will have =
to wait---these are retired teachers working on this project, so their =
hearts are in the right place...they're just in a retirement center =
working on these projects.
=20
You can also make your own tactile books with directions at: =20

Subject: Target: Tactile books

A special education teacher is requesting that I order "books with =
tactile
features" for students with vision impairments and other students who =
have
difficulty enjoying library books in the usual way.

I have a few questions for LM_NETTERs regarding this request:

What would be some titles/publishers/vendors of these books?

Would I keep these books in a separate collection so that special needs
students always have them available? (other kids might find them awfully
interesting, too. Do I just start adding MANY of these to the library?)

This is a new area of book purchasing for me.
Thanks for your help.
Marcia
