Another place to purchase tactile/braille books is: Sacramento Braille Transcribers Inc. 2791 24th Street Sacramento, CA 95818 916-455-9121 FAX 916-452-9140 Each tactile/braille book has a file jacket in the back that contains a = print copy of the book. These books are provided for free to schools, = libraries and non profit agencies that serve visually impaired children = in California. Out of state agencies and individuals can purchase the = books at cost -- prices range from $6.00 to $12.00 a book (in 2002.) = Right now there are about 13-14 titles available. National Braille Press (www.nbp.org) also sells a few tactile/large = print/braille books, including a really cool astronomy book called = "Touch the stars." You will have to specify =3D "pop-up" or "tactile" books in the search---I'm thinking of those books = =3D such as "Pat the Bunny" and the Clifford books with the "fur" or other = =3D tactile surfaces. Most can be located also by choosing "preschool" =3D titles. Depending upon the reading level of the student, you may not = =3D want these titles for your students because the reading levels will be = =3D so low. =3D20 However, the American Printing House for the Blind offers a complete =3D series of tactile books (large print and braille combination--twin =3D vision) that your VI teacher should be aware of and should be able to = =3D order for the student using APH Quota Funds. I have a few questions for LM_NETTERs regarding this request: What would be some titles/publishers/vendors of these books? Would I keep these books in a separate collection so that special needs students always have them available? (other kids might find them awfully interesting, too. Do I just start adding MANY of these to the library?) This is a new area of book purchasing for me. Thanks for your help.
