I have never used any incentives - I tell the students what I expect and then I enforce what I said. I ask for please and thank you for every request and give them the same. I will speak to a student quietly the first time my expectations are not met - they are also posted on the wall. The second time I may ask the student not to return until a certain time period - depends on infraction. I may use a contract with the student if necessary - for reasons of language - that is- sexist- homophobic - racist. if need be, I call home to a parent - although I have not done this in over 20 years. I also don't like to the refer a student to the VP - seems like a defeat to me. It helps that I am in a private school where discipline is important and I am backed 100 % by the administration. I guess my advice is be firm- be fair- be consistent.
